about

"This story haunted me when I was a small child". says Mansard Peridot of The Denisovans. "I had always felt like I was not a part of everything that I saw or felt when I was the age that Jon is in the story. I went around in a daze for most of my childhood and young adult years, and the only thing that gave me any consolation was this story, The Forgotten Door, by Alexander Rey. It's the story of a young boy from a far distant and highly evolved planet who accidentally falls through a hidden doorway. He winds up in a cave in the mountains on Earth, with amnesia from his fall. He remembers that his name is Jon, and he can recognize that certain things, like books, are familiar, while others, like cars, are not. He doesn't speak English, but he does read minds, and that helps him to find his way. I could understand it: an alien child, lost, amnesiatic. He wasn't from there, but didn't know how he got there, just that...he didn't belong where he was. Subtle but powerful for me."
